The ottomans are neatly tucked away for occasional use, utilizing otherwise unused space. The glass table, clean lines and off-the-floor furniture make this room appear more spacious.
Kids' loft beds that house a dresser, desk and shelving all in one unit are great functional space savers.
Making the Most of a Small Space
The key to utilizing a small space is organization. Some of us are good at it; others are not. We have a few tips to get your small space more organized.
First, get rid of what you really don't need. Less clutter will undoubtedly make your room seem larger. Then create a place for everything by using all available space. Tall shelving, cabinets, or armoires will utilize vertical space while creating extra storage or display area.
Choose furniture that serves a dual purpose. A glass coffee table that houses four soft ottomans is a great example. Plus, glass and acrylic furniture and fixtures are great for opening up a space. Your eye passes through the object, creating the illusion of empty space. Also, if light can pass under an object, it looks smaller. The room appears more spacious because more floor space is visible. Using a sofa on legs instead of a skirted sofa is one example. Mirrors can also make a room feel more open, creating a different kind of space-creating illusion
End tables with drawers or doors are more functional than just a plain surface. On the other hand, if storage is not the issue, a regular table will appear lighter and lighter furniture will make the room appear larger.
Other tips for making a room look larger:
- Use light colors, even white, not only on the walls, but throughout the room.
- Tall, long window treatments will add the illusion of height.
- Instead of scattering art about the walls, try concentrating on one wall, making an interesting grouping.
Avoid lots of contrasting colors throughout the room. Breaking up the room in this way will make it appear smaller.
